Why Oxygen, and the Wounded Brain

A brain injury is, in part, a wound to the blood supply. When the brain is injured, tiny capillaries tear and swell, and blood flow to the surrounding tissue drops. Starved of oxygen, cells in that region can fall quiet, neither fully lost nor fully working, for months or years.

Here is where the logic of HBOT meets the injured brain. Under pressure, oxygen dissolves directly into the blood plasma, the fluid of the blood, which can still move through narrowed vessels that red blood cells struggle to pass. That oxygen-rich plasma can reach into swollen, oxygen-starved tissue.

This is why researchers have studied HBOT for brain injury for decades. The TreatNOW Coalition, a nationwide network of veterans, physicians, clinicians, and advocates, reports more than 31,000 veterans, athletes, first responders, and citizens returned to work, school, or active duty through its affiliated clinics.

And our purpose is carried by this: HBOT for TBI and PTSD is considered off-label by the FDA, and it is not yet covered for most Veterans. That is precisely the fight.
